In August 2014 the parents of a 2 year old child told the Otago Daily Times newspaper that their son was able to leave the centre unnoticed, crossing a busy road and was found by a member of the public. It was reported that the centre was well-staffed with above the minimum required number of adults and that a faulty latch on the gate may have been to blame. But note that close supervision for children under 5 years of age is important for safety at all times. The adults/teachers should know where each child is and what each child is doing, and be involved in children's play
